Essential Operational Search Training
These courses are those we consider essential for any organisation intending to provide a robust and professional response to lost or missing person incidents.

It's not just about what you learn from us,
it's also about what we can achieve together.
1
Search Technician
Following on from a foundation level Search Awareness delivery, Search Technician (ST) is the first of our occupational competence training courses designed to meet the needs of SAR teams deploying to lost and missing person search incidents.

A well trained and capable L&MPS Search Technician is able to demonstrate searcher spacing, a practical application of different search techniques, can explain the difference between detection & recognition and how Missing Person Behaviour can influence their search tactics.

In addition to these, a competent Search Technician needs to be able to receive and record information relevant to a search and contribute to the passing of critical, accurate and relevant information at de-briefs.

They will also need to apply procedures at a potential crime scene and mitigate the effect of outside influences on both themselves and the search incident.

Able to apply appropriate health and safety controls to a missing person search incident, the Search Technician is a critical member of the overall SAR response.
2
Search Team Leader
Building upon the L&MPS Search Technician training, Search Team Leaders (STLs) are an essential part of any SAR organisation and those individuals who are certified to fulfil this duty can expect to be challenged in both their training and on an operational response.

On completion of a L&MPS Search Team Leader course, delegates will be able to demonstrate appropriate preparation and planning for the deployment of a search team, have a good appreciation of different types of terrain and be able to consider how the environmental conditions can impact on their team’s tasking. A L&MPS STL will need to be able to demonstrate the allocation of specific team roles and deliver a search team briefing using a recognised format.

With an ability to demonstrate an acceptable level of leadership, supervision and monitoring, whilst passing clear instructions of the search tactics to be employed, the STL must be able to reinforce search methods, techniques and best practice in a structured manner.
A competent STL will be able to evaluate search progress and know how to receive and record critical information relating to a search, whilst notifying other relevant agencies and organisations as appropriate.
Our STLs need to be able to recognise and deal with outside influences in order to ensure their search remains effective and is not compromised and when a lost or missing person is located, they need to demonstrate how to deal with the rescue scenario.
Where there are suspicious circumstances the STL needs to know how to manage the ‘Actions On’ (Point of Find) procedures relevant to a potential crime scene.
As part of the management of information and resources during the post-search activity, the STL will need to evaluate the details required for briefing to Search Management, whilst ensuring the welfare of their Search Technicians, with a particular focus on potential traumatic incidents.
The STL, as the team’s representative, will be expected to explain their team’s contribution to a search incident. As part of a structured de-briefing process, the STL needs to instil confidence, whilst providing a rationalised Search Assurance result.

Lost Person Behaviour
The Lost Person Behaviour course, delivered by Lost & Missing Persons Search (L&MPS) International, has no expectations as to previous exposure to search and rescue incidents involving lost and missing persons. By the end of this course delegates will have an awareness of how to maximise the use of lost person behaviour, profiling and basic search techniques when involved in the search for lost and missing persons.
